Use Shopify Magic to Draft Product Descriptions
For E-Commerce Business Owner / Online Sellers ·
What This Does
Every new SKU needs a description, and writing one from scratch takes 15-20 minutes when you factor in staring at a blank field and second-guessing the tone. Shopify Magic drafts that description inside the product page itself, using the title and details you've already entered, so you're editing instead of starting cold.
Before You Start
- You have a Shopify store on any plan. Shopify Magic ships free with every tier, from Basic through Advanced
- You're logged into your Shopify Admin from a desktop browser (the text generator isn't available in the mobile app)
- You have the product's key details ready: material, size, use case, and anything that makes it different from a similar listing
Steps
1. Open the product you're describing
Go to Products in the left sidebar of your Shopify Admin, then open an existing product or click Add product to start a new one. You're looking for the Description field partway down the page.
2. Launch the generator
Above or beside the empty Description field, look for a sparkle icon labeled "Generate text" or "Write with AI." Click it and a side panel opens asking for context about the product.
What you should see: A Shopify Magic panel with your product's name already filled in, plus fields for keywords and tone.
3. Give it something to work with
The product name pulls in automatically. Add a short list of keywords, the actual features and search terms you want in the copy, not vague adjectives. For a mug, that might be "stoneware, dishwasher safe, 12oz, matte glaze" rather than "great gift." Pick a tone from the dropdown (Professional, Persuasive, Playful, Sophisticated, Empathetic, or Witty) that matches how you'd talk to this product's buyer.
4. Generate, then edit before you publish
Click Generate. You'll get a full paragraph in a few seconds. Read it closely: Shopify Magic sometimes invents a feature your product doesn't actually have, like assuming a mug comes with a lid when it doesn't. Fix anything wrong, click Generate again for a different angle if the first draft misses, or edit directly in the field. Save the product once it's accurate.
Real Example
Scenario: You're adding a new ceramic pour-over coffee set to your Shopify store the night before it goes live and don't have 20 minutes to spend on copy.
What you enter: Keywords: "handmade, dishwasher safe, 400ml, pour-over, minimalist, includes reusable filters." Tone: Sophisticated.
What you get: A short paragraph describing the set's size, materials, and included filters in a polished tone, ready to trim down to your actual word count and check against the real product specs before it goes live.
Tips
- Generate two or three versions with different tones before picking one. The differences are bigger than you'd expect, and one usually fits your brand voice better than the others
- Feed it your actual best-selling search terms as keywords, not generic adjectives. If "insulated water bottle" is what buyers search, put that phrase in the keyword field and it will show up in the output
- Treat every draft as a first pass, not a final one. You're the one responsible for what's published, and a wrong claim about materials or specs can turn into a return or a bad review
