Clean Up Product Photos With Canva's Background Remover
For E-Commerce Business Owner / Online Sellers ·
What This Does
Every marketplace wants product photos formatted differently. Amazon expects a pure white background on the main image, Etsy shoppers respond better to a styled lifestyle shot, and neither one looks right shot on your kitchen counter. Canva's Background Remover strips the background from a phone photo in a couple of seconds so you can drop in whatever the platform actually requires, no studio setup needed.
Before You Start
- You have a Canva account. The free plan includes limited AI credits (Canva's current allowance is a set number of Standard-tier AI uses per month), and Canva Pro ($18/month) removes the cap and adds commercial licensing for the images you generate
- You have a phone photo of the product, clear lighting and a reasonably distinct subject work best
- You know which background each platform needs (Amazon's main image requirement is pure white; Etsy and your own site can take a styled scene)
Steps
1. Upload your photo into a design
Open Canva and start a new design, or open an existing product template. Upload your phone photo from the Uploads panel.
2. Find the Background Remover
Click the photo to select it, then look in the image editing panel (sometimes under an "Edit Image" or "Magic Studio" menu) for Background Remover. Click it.
What you should see: The background disappears within a few seconds, leaving your product on a transparent checkered background.
Troubleshooting: Background Remover does best on products with a clear edge against a solid backdrop. Items with fine detail, fur, mesh, or intricate cutouts can come out with rough or semi-transparent edges. If the result looks off around the edges, a dedicated background tool may do better on that specific product, but for most plain product shots this handles it in one click.
3. Add the background each platform needs
With the background removed, add a new background layer behind it: a plain white rectangle for your Amazon main image, or a styled scene (a wood table, a plant, a fabric backdrop) for Etsy's gallery or your Instagram feed. Export at the dimensions the platform specifies.
Real Example
Scenario: You shot a ceramic mug on your kitchen counter and need it ready for both Amazon's white-background requirement and Etsy's more lifestyle-driven gallery.
What you do: Remove the background once, then duplicate the design twice: one version gets a solid white background for Amazon, the other gets a styled kitchen scene with a coffee bag and a folded towel for Etsy.
What you get: Two platform-ready images from one photo shoot, in a couple of minutes instead of the 15-20 minutes a manual edit used to take.
Tips
- Shoot your original photo with decent separation between the product and the background. A cleaner starting photo means a cleaner AI cutout, especially around edges and shadows
- If you're removing backgrounds on more than a handful of products a week, Canva Pro pays for itself fast since the free tier's AI allowance runs out quickly at that volume
- Keep the transparent-background version saved separately so you can swap in a new backdrop without redoing the removal step every time you need a different platform's format
